Laila Bloomstone is a Toronto-based emerging artist working in acrylics. In her artistic practice, she explores the intricate connection between moments and food. Her primary objective is to capture the essence of those seemingly insignificant pauses—like the hurried stop at a gas station during a road trip where the contemplative moment of selecting snacks takes over, or the nostalgic act of choosing treats for a movie date. These instances, such as stumbling upon your mom's favourite candy at a convenience store, are laden with a unique sense of time and memory.
Much of her imagery is drawn from real-life snack runs across the city of Toronto—at Cineplex movie theatres, Circle K, Esso, Dollarama, and local corner stores. Her references include Canadian candies and chips, photographed using her iPhone. This body of work began during a vacation snack run, when she found herself taking photos of the snack aisle and texting her friends, “what snacks do you want?” It’s all eye candy—fun to look at, not to eat. Zero cal. Zero sugar.
Her style embraces realism: from a distance, her paintings appear photographic; up close, her brushstrokes come alive. Each piece reflects a personal perspective shaped by memory, humour, and hyper-observation.
Laila showcased her work multiple times during her time at Western University through juried exhibitions and a public display at George and Corey's Foodmarket in London, Ontario. Since graduating in 2024, she has exhibited at the Toronto Outdoor Art Fair in Nathan Phillips Square—where her piece Tasting Colours was featured in the TOAF Curated Collection Hot Town – Summer in the City—had a show at Deco Gallery in Toronto, and was juried into The Artist Project 2025.
